CRP Beneficiaries with VSLs in 2018

Some of the chicken raising CSVs and beneficiaries have what is called a Village Savings Loan (VSL) The beneficiaries we have visited with VSLs seem to be sustainable and functioning very well. Beneficiaries really like the VSL model because it provides a much easier to access loans, with a much lower interest rate, when compared to a bank.  Not all VSL members are CRP beneficiaries, in fact, many are not. VSLs are open to everyone within the community.

Mr. Veng Leat received a loan in 2015 for $120 starting his chicken raising business. He makes $75 every 3 months from it and he receives $250 a month as a solider. He has expressed concern for his chickens dying even though he vaccinates them; for his business to improve, he would like to have more training on feeding chickens and one on providing the proper vaccines for the chickens. Mr. Veng Leat is a CSV for  group 7 which consists of 12 members; he is also the CSV for the group 7 VSL. The VSL for this group started in June of 2017 and now has 14 active members.  His CRP meetings are held every 3 months and his VSL meetings are held every month.

Mr. Van Vin received a loan of $120 in 2015 for his chicken raising business. He makes about $62.50 every 3 months from his chickens. In addition to selling chicken, he grows vegetables where he makes $500/year from and other family members contribute between $25 and $50/year.  He has also expressed similar concerns with Mr. Veng Leat on chicken raising. His CRP group consists of 5 members, but his VSL group consists of 46.  The VSL for this group started in September of 2017; with 46 active members, he has expressed his concern that the group is getting too big and there being too much money to handle. He has suggested other leadership roles within the community as a way of splitting up the work and making it easier to manage with such large VSLs.  He combines his CRP meetings with VSL meetings which occur monthly.
